International Guidelines on Natural and Nature-Based Features for Flood Risk Management for United States Army Corp of Engineers
USACE requested an overhaul of the yet incomplete International NNBF Guidelines. This required an entire rebranding and layout of over 1,000 pages and 300 graphics. I developed brand guidelines, templates, and completed a majority of the layout as well as recreated or created anew around 200 graphics.
Since this would be an international document, I didn’t want the NNBF Guidelines to feel too US-centric, and developed colors that are not often used for government documents here, taking some design cues from classic Scandinavian design using bold colors and simple forms.
The graphics also had to be clear and more importantly: accessible. That meant avoiding small print where possible and using high contrast color combinations throughout each graphic. While this wasn’t always possible, the final the result still followed these design principles.
The document has since been downloaded over 5,000 times by agencies around the world and resides on USACE’s Engineering with Nature site. It has also won an excellence award from the Environment Agency (of United Kingdoms) A 150 page overview document is also available, as well as hard copies of both.
